EVENT: JOHN JANZEN in JUNE Come Play With Us!

It might sprinkle, but we’ll have a roof!

EVENT  Saturday, June 2, 2018, 1:30 – 3:30.

WHERE?   John Janzen Nature Centre Compost Deck, 7000 143 St NW, Edmonton (Same parking lot as Fort Edmonton).

WHO?     Everyone is welcome. Players from groups all over the province are invited. Bring your friends and family! Make them sing!

HOW?     Format change for this year: instead of pre-chosen song lists, we’ll be playing songs from the Beloff Daily Ukulele / Daily Ukulele Leap Year books, chosen on the spot (Player’s Choice, circle style) and the mass of ukulele players will play them together. You don’t need to be in a group to come and play!

It’s free! No cost to you.

MORE INFO?     See the John Janzen Centre event page here on our site for more, including a list of some of our sweet door prizes.

Last Minute World Ukulele Day Shirts

Want one of these?

Your wish is my command — yes, we’ll have shirts this year. I’ll be placing the order in time for World Ukulele Day (February 2)

  • Is it sold by the Edmonton Ukulele Circle?  Nope, same as last time, these items are designed and produced and offered by a Circle member to you.
  • When will I get it?  On or before February 2.
  • Is it the same brand of shirt as last time? Yes. This shirt is ROYAL BLUE in colour; standard order is a unisex short sleeve Gildan heavyweight cotton, sizes S-M-L-XL-2XL-3XL. Cost is $30, payable by e-transfer. A small number of common sizes will be made available for the naked or the late or the impulse shopper.
  • Can you special-request ladies or youth sizes? How about unisex 4XL and 5XL? Yeah, I got your back. You can also ask about other sizes, and you will be accommodated if they are available. These special requests must be prepaid by e-transfer, however, as they will not be ordered unless they have a happy home to go to.
  • Why is it last minute? Ideally, this would have been decided and arranged earlier, but it was not.
  • What else you got goin’ on? I am already stylishly dressed! I have tote bags tough enough to carry both Daily Ukulele books, plus carry your kazoo and your water bottle, in two different designs. I have strings, of many varieties in soprano, concert, and tenor (baritone sold out). I still have Hipster Owl shirts from last year, also. (People who were interested in a reorder and did not pick up or contact me — I probably still have your shirt. If you want it, let me know, or I’ll free them for sale to others on February 2!)

Hipster Owl Shirts Reorder! Also, new swag.

Did you miss out on Hipster Owl?

Good news, he is back, and looking snootily at you over his glasses. I’ll be placing the order in time for you to wear it to John Janzen (June 11)

  • Is it sold by the Edmonton Ukulele Circle?  Nope, same as last time, these items are designed and produced and offered by a Circle member to you.
  • When will I get it?  After June 1.
  • Is it the same shirt as was available in February? Yep. Maroon colour, standard order is a unisex short sleeve Gildan heavyweight cotton, sizes S-M-L-XL-2XL-3XL. Cost is $30, payable by cash or e-transfer. Pre-payment is preferred, but a small number of common sizes will be made available for the naked or the late or the impulse shopper.
  • Can you special-request ladies or youth sizes? Yeah, I got your back. You can also ask about other sizes, and you will be accommodated if they are available. These special requests must be prepaid (preferably by e-transfer) however, as they will not be ordered unless they have a happy home to go to.
  • Why did it take so long? GOOD REASONS. But if you spoke to me earlier about reordering, I still have your name. (You’re not obligated to buy one, but I still have your name/size. Just let me know.)
  • What else you got goin’ on? I have that shirt already! How about a different design on a serious tote bag tough enough to carry both Daily Ukulele books, plus carry your kazoo and your water bottle? A different shirt, maybe? I’m thinking spring green with a nice nature-theme ukulele, or something. Another post will have details. Here is a secret: A new tote and a new design shirt will be door prizes at John Janzen!

Well, that was fun!

A dandy time was had by all at World Ukulele Day

Feedback included:

  • WOOOOOOOO! (Indeed!)
  • Can I join your group? And your other group? (Yes! And probably!)
  • Who’s that awesome person playing now? (Which one? We had multiple awesomeness!)

Also, it was noted that occasionally it was difficult to hear people speaking on stage. (We’ll be working to change that for next time!)

We had at least 130 players, and a full contingent of singers and attendees in the stands.

After five years

On Sunday, it was announced that Gary’s last circle as leader would be December 2016, following which we will continue as a self-led group.

Gary, a wonderful musician and teacher, has been part of the Edmonton Ukulele Circle for its entire existence, helping to grow and develop it from a quartet to the great galumphing organization it is today. He will be appearing locally with his guitar.

Come celebrate Gary in December at a party with date to be determined.
