Ukrainian Cultural Village GIG: Sunday, June 25

Sunday, June 25
ucv vintage gig.JPG

The Circle will meet for our June Ukrainian Cultural Village gig from 1-3 on Sunday, June 25 at the Ukrainian Cultural Village, Highway 16, east of Edmonton, just east of Elk Island National Park. RAIN OR SHINE, my dears. It’s vintage vehicle day! We encourage carpooling/ridesharing to the location. Please allow yourself an hour of travel time from the city to get there.

Any circle member is welcome to sign up to perform with the group at this engagement. Chairs are provided, bring your own stand and books, or arrange to share.

There are two performance stages, one in the courtyard (#68 on the park map, same place as last year if you played) and one on the flatbed stage in the vehicle exhibit area (unknown exact location, but pretty obvious once we arrive). We are fielding two groups of players, one for each stage, as the performances will overlap. So yes, two bands. Players wishing to accommodate physical access requirements will probably prefer the courtyard side.

COURTYARD:  1:30 – 2:30    FLATBED STAGE:  2 – 3.

We’ll be playing songs selected from our repertoire lists (click to see them) and probably working with lists 12, 13, and 14, as well as other vintage (pre-1935) tunes.

Hipster Owl Shirts Reorder! Also, new swag.

Did you miss out on Hipster Owl?

Good news, he is back, and looking snootily at you over his glasses. I’ll be placing the order in time for you to wear it to John Janzen (June 11)

  • Is it sold by the Edmonton Ukulele Circle?  Nope, same as last time, these items are designed and produced and offered by a Circle member to you.
  • When will I get it?  After June 1.
  • Is it the same shirt as was available in February? Yep. Maroon colour, standard order is a unisex short sleeve Gildan heavyweight cotton, sizes S-M-L-XL-2XL-3XL. Cost is $30, payable by cash or e-transfer. Pre-payment is preferred, but a small number of common sizes will be made available for the naked or the late or the impulse shopper.
  • Can you special-request ladies or youth sizes? Yeah, I got your back. You can also ask about other sizes, and you will be accommodated if they are available. These special requests must be prepaid (preferably by e-transfer) however, as they will not be ordered unless they have a happy home to go to.
  • Why did it take so long? GOOD REASONS. But if you spoke to me earlier about reordering, I still have your name. (You’re not obligated to buy one, but I still have your name/size. Just let me know.)
  • What else you got goin’ on? I have that shirt already! How about a different design on a serious tote bag tough enough to carry both Daily Ukulele books, plus carry your kazoo and your water bottle? A different shirt, maybe? I’m thinking spring green with a nice nature-theme ukulele, or something. Another post will have details. Here is a secret: A new tote and a new design shirt will be door prizes at John Janzen!

Well, that was fun!

A dandy time was had by all at World Ukulele Day

Feedback included:

  • WOOOOOOOO! (Indeed!)
  • Can I join your group? And your other group? (Yes! And probably!)
  • Who’s that awesome person playing now? (Which one? We had multiple awesomeness!)

Also, it was noted that occasionally it was difficult to hear people speaking on stage. (We’ll be working to change that for next time!)

We had at least 130 players, and a full contingent of singers and attendees in the stands.

Shirts SOLD OUT except…

The order has been placed and closed, and will arrive on or before the 31st. If you’ve prepaid or confirmed a request with me, you are covered.

  • As of Sunday night, there are only TWO SHIRTS left. ONE men’s large and ONE men’s extra large. See me at Blackbird if you want to reserve one. $30 each; first handful of cash wins.
  • Future shirt and swag plans: at some point, more shirts (and music book tote bags!) will be available, with other designs, so if you missed out, don’t be sad! You, too, can be fashionably attired.

Other Stuff

Hey, I found some super cheap table stands in a certain Swedish store.

  • Are they elegant? NO.
  • Are they heavy-duty? NO. But they’ll hold a Beloff book or your tablet.
  • Are they made of stark and glaring white plastic that will hurt your artistic soul just a tiny bit? YOU BET YOUR BOTTOM THEY ARE.
  • Are they from a big cardboard box on the main floor right by the checkout? YES.

I paid $2.10 including tax, and will sell you one at cost because I love you. I’ll bring them to Blackbird and you can see if you want one or not. I have a small pile of them, maybe 7.

If you like the concept but not the execution, they also have a bamboo version at the store for $17.00, but what are you, a billionaire? A panda? A billionaire panda?!

Group Lessons for Beginners

Welcome to all the new folks who have come to check out the circle!

Sooo, several of the new players have asked about group lessons. You are in luck, as our friend Ron Mercer is offering a series through Strathcona County starting January 19, 2017 through March 9.

If you’re looking for one-on-one instruction instead, let us know, as we can help connect you with a teacher.
